Why Ranking #1 on Google Isn't Enough Anymore

For years, the goal was simple: get to position one on Google, and the enquiries follow. Most schools' marketing plans are still built around that single idea. It's worth saying plainly... that finish line has moved, and a lot of schools haven't noticed yet.
AI Overviews - the summarised answer box that now appears above the traditional list of search results, show up on roughly half of all Google searches, up sharply from around a quarter to a third when they first launched. When one appears, the click-through rate for the very top organic result drops by somewhere between 30 and 50 per cent. A parent gets their answer, and a portion of them never scroll down to the list of websites at all.
Position one is still worth having. It's just no longer the whole game.
Three layers of visibility, not one
The useful way to think about this now isn't “ranking” in the old sense, it's whether you show up across three distinct layers, each of which behaves differently and needs to be earned separately.
AI Overview inclusion.
Whether Google's own AI-generated summary names and links to your school when a parent searches something like “best independent schools in [town].” This sits above traditional rankings and is what most parents will actually read first.
Generative citation.
Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude name your school as a source when someone asks them directly, completely independent of Google. A parent researching schools increasingly starts that research inside one of these tools, not a search engine at all.
Zero-click featured placement.
Featured snippets and “people also ask” boxes. No click happens, but your name and a line of your own words sit in front of the parent anyway — still valuable for recognition, even without the traffic.
A school can rank well in traditional search and still be invisible across all three of these — which, in practice, is exactly what's happening to a lot of schools with a perfectly respectable Google ranking and a quietly declining enquiry pipeline.
What this actually means for admissions
If a parent's first real exposure to their shortlist happens inside an AI-generated summary, and your school isn't one of the two or three names in it, you don't get a low-ranked listing they might still scroll to. You get nothing...no impression, no click, no chance to retarget them later. The old fallback position, “we're not first, but we're still on page one,” doesn't really exist in the same way anymore.
The schools that show up in these AI-generated answers tend to share the same underlying traits: content that states things directly rather than dancing around them, genuine evidence of expertise and authority rather than generic marketing copy, and a technically solid website that both AI systems and parents can actually navigate. None of that is a trick or a workaround — it's simply what these systems are designed to reward, and it happens to be the same thing that makes a website good for a human reader too.
This is exactly why we build every piece of content and every page with all three layers in mind from the outset, rather than optimising for a Google ranking and hoping the rest follows.
