Is Your School Showing Up in AI Search Results?

A growing number of parents no longer start their search for a school by scrolling through a list of blue links. They ask a question “best independent schools in xxxx for a shy child,” “schools with strong sixth form results near xxx” and an AI system gives them a synthesised answer, often with two or three names attached to it.
If your school isn't one of those names, you're not losing a click. You're losing the shortlist entirely, before a parent ever reaches your website.
This matters more than it did even a year ago. AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of all Google searches, up sharply from their early rollout, and even a first-place ranking is seeing a meaningful drop in click-through when an AI answer sits above it. Reputation and a strong Google ranking used to be enough on their own. They aren't anymore, not because they stopped mattering, but because there's a new layer sitting on top of them that most schools haven't checked yet.
The good news is that checking where you stand takes about twenty minutes, and it doesn't require any technical background. Here's exactly how to do it.
The 20-minute AI visibility check
1. Ask the question a parent would ask, not your school's name.
Don't search “[Your School] reviews.” Search the way a parent actually would: “best independent schools in [your town],” “schools with good pastoral care near [county],” “independent schools with sixth form open days in [region].” The answer to a buyer-style question is what actually determines whether you're in the conversation.
2. Run the same question across more than one AI system.
Try it in Google (and look for the AI Overview box at the top of the results), then in ChatGPT, then in Perplexity, then in Gemini and Claude if you have access. Each of these pulls from a different index and cites different sources for the same question, a school that's well represented in Google's AI Overview can be completely absent from Perplexity's answer, and vice versa. Checking only one gives you an incomplete, and often misleading, picture.
3. Try a few different phrasings.
AI answers are sensitive to how a question is worded. Run two or three variations of the same underlying query (“best schools for...” vs “which schools are known for...” vs “independent schools that specialise in...”) before you draw any conclusions.
4. Use a private or logged-out browser window.
AI tools personalise results based on your own search and browsing history. If you're logged in and search from your everyday browser, you may see a version of the answer that's skewed by your own habits, not what a prospective parent, searching cold, would actually see.
5. Check your analytics for AI referral traffic.
Some AI tools, including Perplexity, link back to sources directly, and that traffic can show up in your analytics or Search Console as a referral. If you're already getting a trickle of visits from an AI platform you didn't know about, that's worth knowing, it tells you where you're already being noticed, and where you have a gap.
If you're not showing up, here's what that usually means
Being absent from an AI answer isn't usually about one broken setting, it's almost always one of three things.
Your content doesn't answer the question directly. AI systems favour content that states things plainly and can be lifted cleanly into an answer, clear headings, direct answers near the top of a page, genuine FAQ content. A beautifully written prospectus page that never actually says who the school suits, or what makes it different, gives an AI system nothing to extract.
There isn't enough evidence of real expertise and authority behind what you're saying. AI systems weigh how trustworthy and well-established a source looks, not just what it says. Thin, generic pages read the same way to an AI system as they do to a sceptical parent.
The technical foundations are letting you down. AI crawlers still depend on the same things Google always has, a fast, clean, mobile-friendly site with a sensible structure. If that's shaky, none of your content is being read properly in the first place, by AI systems or by parents.
None of this is a one-off fix. It's an ongoing discipline, the same way your open days need refreshing every year, so does your visibility in a search landscape that's shifting faster than most schools have capacity to track.
